Changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

by Gean Oliveira on April 8, 2008

If you’re planning to live in as an immigrant, have you heard about the changes that the Government of has proposed? They say it is necessary to modernize the system, with a backlog with more than 900,000 applications.

The opposition leaders and some associations in don’t accept the changes as they are going to select only the people that the Government wants, not the ones who could immigrate to . Right now, as you may know, the system is based in points (meaning if you have the minimum requirement, you can apply). When you do this, you will receive a letter from the Government of with the timeline of your application.

If the amendment is passed, you could still apply to live in . However, it is up to the minister of to decide which applications will be processed first. It will be faster for some professions than others. The applicants who applied prior February 27, 2008 will not be subject to the new measures.

It is complicated, I know… To me, it makes sense. As we have a backlog, why don’t they process all the applications and then, decide which ones are more important? For example, in we have a shortage of doctors and nurses. They should be processed first than other professions. But the Government of should also provide conditions to those , explaining for them that they cannot work once they arrive. However, they know this and they can receive information upfront on how to work in .

What do you think?

Hey Gean…. I think that it makes sense, but here’s the catch: Ontario is in desperate need of doctors and nurses. But even for those immigrants who are already here, it’s very hard to get a position in those areas. So I’m guessing here if they shouldn’t take care of this first, and then worry about the applications backlog…..

Nick: sorry but I did not get your point.

Cleber: I completely agree with you. Canada is not a perfect country and we - as immigrants - should also advise those who wants to live here. For some professions, it is very hard, expensive and not fair. At least we can see that some provinces now realize the mistakes that they have taken. And don’t forget that this is not the province - but the associations. I know a friend of mine that her husband has a degree in physiotherapy and he’s been trying to recognize his credentials for more than 3 years.

Julianna: The first thing that you should do is evaluate your points. One of the most common ways to immigrate to Canada is receive a “Skilled Worker visa”. You can get more information going to http://www.cic.gc.ca

I’ve described before the steps to get the Skilled Worker Visa.
